GAR Encampment In Evansville

Description:
This photograph was taken at an encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) held in June 1940 in Evansville, Indiana. In this photograph, at least eight Civil War veterans are seated on a balcony or porch of a city building. Dr. Edward Howard Cowan (E. H. Cowan), Crawfordsville's last living Civil War veteran before his death, is seated near the center of the row. Cowan is holding a cane, and he is turned away from the camera. This photograph originally belonged to Dr. Edward Howard Cowan (E. H. Cowan) of Crawfordsville. Cowan was Montgomery County's last living Civil War veteran before his death. The caption on the back of this photograph reads, "Commander in Chief Mennet - Surgeon General - E. H. Cowan, Gettysburg Reunion, 1938." In the photograph, Cowan (second from right) is standing outside of the commander-in-chief's (Dr. Overton H. Mennet's) tent at the 1938 Gettysburg Reunion of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). Mennet is most likely the man second from the left. The other two men dressed in white are unidentified.

The front of this Christmas Card reads, "September 1942 National Encampment G.A.R. [Grand Army of the Republic] Indianapolis, Indiana -- Past Commanders-in-chief Anderson, Nixon, and Rownd -- Merry Christmas." This card was originally located in a file dedicated to the life of Dr. Edward Howard Cowan (the last Civil War veteran from Montgomery County, Indiana). A note on the back of this photograph reads, "Greetings to you: I took this at National 1942--We missed you and your father, and have many happy memories of seeing you together. Their lives have been happy and we are glad to have known each one of them. -- Love, Irma." This photograph is in a set with p058-417-432.
