Community House on East Main Street
Description:
To ready East Main Street for the new post office, the Community House (302 East Main) was torn down & the house next to it. The community house & cafeteria served meals in the community. The Community House was founded by Martha Griffith (a medical doctor) who also helped to organize the Carnegie Library in 1897. The last time the Community House was listed in the Crawfordsville city guide was 1938, the lot was listed as vacant in 1940. The back of the photo says, "Community House meals were served here and it was torn down to built new post office at the corner of Water and Main facing Main."

The Pickett barn burned September 4, 1939; the structur owned by Walter Pickett was totally destroyed. There were 3 horses killed and were the property of Hy-Grade Dairy Products (wirh reported loss of $2,600), 15-20 tons of hay, five delivery wagaons were also destroyed. Walter Pickett lost several hundred domestic rabbits and timber. Nearby homes also received damage along with toll lines and Wester Union telegraph lines. Sadly, Harold Orr (37) died late Monday afternoon of a heart attack reportedly induced by over exertion while aiding city fireman. Harold Orr was a Veteran of the World War (served in France for 2 years) and woirked for RR Donnelley. The railroad tracks at Federal Street can also be seen in the foreground.

Ben Hur Building being renovated in the Summer of 1940. The Ben Hur Building is at the SW corner of Water and Main Street. The building was erected in 1911. The marble cornerstone was laid in April 1911. This is the inside staircase which in picture 20141008-2029can be seen unfinished. In 2014 the building is currently vacated due to the building needing further repairs.

In 1938 this gas station was known as the Crawfordsville Super Service, then in 1940 - 1942 irt was the Pinkstaff Filling Station, in 1944 it was called Auman's Standard Service, in 1946 it was Martin's Service Station and by 1949 it was called Sherfey's Standard Service.
