This photograph was taken during the 1909 Grand Army of the Republic (G. A. R.) Encampment in Crawfordsville. The event started on 1909-05-19 and ended on 1909-05-21. This photograph was taken on South Green Street. Businesses on the east side of the street including The Clipper restaurant (center) and the Elston Bank (far left) are pictured. The J. B. Wilhite cigar store is also visible (a cigar Indian is outside the store), and the Ransdell and Rogers Barber Shop is between Elston Bank and the Wilhite cigar store. This photograph was taken from the intersection of Washington Street and Main Street in downtown Crawfordsville. One of the businesses pictured is the Louis Bischof's Big Store. The following note was written on the back of the postcard (the postcard was not stamped or addressed): "G. A. R. Encampment 1909-05-18-21, Crawfordsville – Indiana..." This photograph was taken during the 1909 Grand Army of the Republic (G. A. R.) Encampment in Crawfordsville. The event started on 1909-05-19 and ended on 1909-05-21. This photograph was taken in Crawfordsville while the arriving G. A. R. posts were marching to the downtown parade. The title on the postcard reads, "Arriving Indiana G. A. R. Encampment 1909, Crawfordsville, Indiana." The B. W. Post of Peoria, Illinois, is marching in the far left side of the photograph, and the Tippecanoe Post of Monticello, Indiana (G. A. R. Post No. 51), is marching in the background. Businesses in the background include: Lyle & Reynolds Foundry, Mercer-Winchel Lumber Yard, and Metal Culvert (the rest of the sign is not visible). The postcard was addressed to Sylvester Miller of Shadeland, Indiana, and the stamp was canceled on 1909-05-21. The message on the postcard reads, "1909-05-21 – Was looking for you down to encampment but did not see you will be up Friday look will let you know how is mother. - A. M. M."
