Marriages

A marriage affidavit is a statement where someone appears with the couple at the courthouse and swears that both parties are of legal age and that no impediment to the marriage exists. Some affidavits were filled out by the parents/guardians or by the clerk with parents/guardians present. Some of the records also contain handwritten consents for underage grooms or brides. We have 9 affidavit books.

A marriage record includes full name of groom and bride (maiden name, if a widow), place of residence, age next birthday, race, occupation, place of birth, father’s name, mother’s maiden name, number of previous marriages, place of marriage, by whom married, date of marriage (month, day, year), record number. We have 15 marriage books.

A license usually includes full first name and surname of groom and bride, race, place of birth, place of residence, occupation, father’s name, mother’s maiden name, number of previous marriages, place of marriage, by whom married, date of marriage (month, day, year), record number. We have 67 license books (books 1-67). Books 1-15 do not have information on parents. NOTE: We have indexed books 1-67. Books 1-22 are digitized and online. Books 43-62 are digitized but available only by request.

This database indexes the names of both the groom and the bride.
